Orcs

Orcs

Orcs

"Look at me. Look at the Orc."

"There is fear and hatred in your eyes. To you I am a monster, a skulker in the shadows, a fiend to scare your children with. A creature to be hunted down and slaughtered like a beast in the fields.

It is time you pay heed to the beast. And see the beast in yourself. I have your fear. But I have earned your respect.

Hear my story. Feel the flow of blood and be thankful. Thankful that it was me, not you, who bore the sword. Thankful to the orcs; born to fight, destined to win peace for all."

This book will change the way you feel about Orcs forever.

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This shelf-bending omnibus comprises the first U.S. release of Nicholls's Orcs trilogy (Bodyguard of Lightning, Legion of Thunder and Warriors of the Tempest), originally published in the U.K. in 1999 and 2000. When a warband of orcs run afoul of their tyrannical mistress on a mission to retrieve an invaluable artifact, they set in motion a series of cataclysmic events that could free their race from long-standing persecution or obliterate them from the realm forever. Pursued by an irate sorceress, ruthless bounty hunters and two vengeance-obsessed armies, Captain Stryke and his misfit band of mercenary orcs embark on a desperate quest to find a set of ancient "instrumentalities" that could save them and their magic-filled world from destruction at the hands of human interlopers. With grand scale world building, labyrinthine plotlines, extensive backstory and pedal-to-the-metal action, Nicholls captures adventure fantasy at its very best. This edition-which also includes a short story entitled "The Taking" (a prequel to the three novels), and an in-depth author interview-will be a cult classic with quest fantasy fans on both sides of the Pond.

    Ladyboys in orcs' clothing2
The point of writing a book starring orcs is to show that, from their point of view (alien though it be from that of humans), they're not the evil ones, and gain the reader's sympathy for those creatures that orcs are. The point is not to redefine them as overly sensitive environmentalists with a rich culture and bursting hearts, and show them sharing feelings over cups of chamomile tea.

Ignoring this missed promise, obvious plot holes, and the flattish characters, the major problem is the apologetic prose. The word "luckily" appears every page or two. Luck, luckily, just barely, saves the day again!

On the plus side, the pacing is good. I felt like reading a dumb fantasy book, and that's what I got. So I finished it! I admit I started scanning past the tensionless battle scenes though.

    Teen/MA rating5
    I love the book sofar.
Some content is explicit but not in a cheesey love story way.
Shows how evil Evil can be, You really hate the bad-guys.
Littered with humor in all the right spots when the story line supports it.
The content fits well together in the progression, nothing seems out of place.

    Entertaining Read...5
I enjoyed reading this trilogy. It was the first time I've ever read a fantasy trilogy. I'm sure there are better and worse, but I was entertained. I have already pre-ordered Mr. Nicholls' upcoming continuation of the Orc story due out next year.

As a sidelight, I think the cover photo is excellent. I found information on the creator, Tom Lauten, of the bust online, but the photographer, Geoff Spear, really did a fantastic job of photographing it.

Great Concept Ruined by Romantic Cliches2
This book had a promising concept that was ruined by terrible romantic clichés.

Possessive, dominant, impossibly good looking male with a ripped physique and a tragic past check

Stunningly beautiful, emotionally vulnerable VIRGINAL female who desperately needs sex and protection- check.

Plot device that ensures they can only be with each other check.

A hero who can "get it up" as often as needed because he's not human check.

The byplay between the protagonists was titillating. But the novel held hints of far deeper and more complex emotional themes. They would have been so interesting to explore. Instead, all that is swept neatly under the rug in favor of rushing its protagonists into bed.

Sascha Duncan is definitely an interesting woman. But it is simply not realistic she could turn from a lifetime schooled in non-emotion to the opposite within weeks. It's just a set-up to justify the sexual dynamic.

The concept of the mating dance is fairly ridiculous; it's a psychic bond that apparently links mates together, can only happen once and can never ever be broken. Uh huh. Really, if a romance author cannot write about two people falling in love without an absurd plot device, perhaps romance should be avoided. Just a thought.

Naturally, one of the overarching themes in the novel is the nature of the animal personality in changelings. Unfortunately, it's used to justify the sexism of the the male characters, including the use of physical force, on the basis of their "animal" nature. It's offensive, and it blights the romance, and it's also not true. In reality, leopards are felines, and their mating is, to put it mildly, brief and violent. Leopards are also solitary and nocturnal, so the social structure of a pack doesn't really make sense. The author even makes a comment that one of the characters is closer to his animal roots because he prefers to be alone.

I'll give the author points for originality, intensity, and plot. The sexual tension between the two leads sizzles and the first two thirds of the novel is very good at building an alternate future world peopled by the cultures of humans and shapeshifters. But grammar skills are just adequate and the plotting and characterizations need plenty of work. The logic holes are big enough to drive a truck through.

The entire plot rests on the fact the Psy have been lying when they say they are non-violent. Yet there is a constant awareness by everyone in the novel of all the violent things the Psy do; from Sascha's knowledge of the "vile" things she has seen on the PsyNet, to the lethal talents the members of the Council all possess. I don't understand how there can even be a pretense of non-violence when it seems to be open knowledge that violence is there.

Likewise, the changelings are portrayed as being the better species. Yet they are horribly violent and vicious, even among themselves. The kill themselves over territorial disputes. They tear people apart and mail off body parts as warnings. It's kind of hard to follow why one is better than the other, or how exactly Lucas Hunter is any different than Nikita Duncan when they are both portrayed as cool, calculating killers.

Fanciful names like SnowDancer and Web of Stars do the book no favors. One is forced to wonder if the author realizes the names Sascha and Nikita are for male characters? Again, she has presented a race of people focused entirely on non-emotional logic. She clearly explains the origin of the names, yet fails to explain why MALE names would have been chosen. It makes no sense.

The author seems to have put a good amount of thought into the world and motivations of her characters and it's really a shame she allowed it be dumbed down to that level. I'm almost sorry I had to drop it down to 2 stars, but deliberate distortion of research material, the offensive sexism in the romance, and the total breakdown in realistic characterization can't justify a higher rating. It's entertaining most of the way though, though, so if you like authors like Sherilyn Kenyon, Keri Arthur, and J.D. Ward, you will probably want to check this out.

It made me feel at home5
The book was interesting, original, yada yada...What got it 5 stars from me was the mention of Manteca!

We've made it! We're on the radar! Even in the fictional future!

    A Little Disapointing 3
I had very high hopes for this book and in some ways it let me down. I really don't feel like it was as suspenseful or as romantic as it should have been.

    Synopsis:

Sascha is one of the Psy, a race of people without emotions. She is incredibly strong and smart, but she finds herself beginning to slip into madness as she realizes she can feel. Lucas is the alpha of the leopard-changeling pack, and he's working with Sascha on a project to build safe homes for his people. He is also in the midst of a murder investigation with strong suspicion toward the Psy. He recognizes Sascha as different, and soon becomes overwhelmed by the desire to claim her as his own.

    The Good Parts:

The romance that happened to be present was nice. The development in the relationship was very well paced.

Lucas is a complex and interesting character. Sexy, smart, and edgy. The author does a good job of letting her readers into his head and heart.

The changelings are a fascinating group, I almost wished the book were just about them. The world building there is flawless. The pack structure, social dynamics, and close relationships are enthralling.

    The Problems:

I felt bombarded with confused, unintelligible information about the Psy. There background, history, purpose, the entire PsyNet thing--it didn't make much sense and it was too boring to try to figure out. The chapters that venture into the PsyNet felt like SciFi B Movie material. As a result, a lot of the book was seriously dull. Worse, all the mumbo-jumbo cut into the otherwise beautiful romance.

I feel this particular book would appeal more to science fiction or fantasy fans then it would romance fans.

    The Host: A Novel

    The Host: A Novel

The author of the Twilight series of # 1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

    Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, May 2008: Stephenie Meyer, creator of the phenomenal teen-vamp Twilight series, takes paranormal romance into alien territory in her first adult novel. Those wary of sci-fi or teen angst will be pleasantly surprised by this mature and imaginative thriller, propelled by equal parts action and emotion. A species of altruistic parasites has peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but feisty Melanie Stryder won't surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories of fellow resistor Jared, Wanderer yields to her body's longing and sets off into the desert to find him. Likely the first love triangle involving just two bodies, it's unabashedly romantic, and the characters (human and alien) genuinely endearing. Readers intrigued by this familiar-yet-alien world will gleefully note that the story's end leaves the door open for a sequel--or another series. --Mari Malcolm

    From Publishers Weekly
In this tantalizing SF thriller, planet-hopping parasites are inserting their silvery centipede selves into human brains, curing cancer, eliminating war and turning Earth into paradise. But some people want Earth back, warts and all, especially Melanie Stryder, who refuses to surrender, even after being captured in Chicago and becoming a host for a soul called Wanderer. Melanie uses her surviving brain cells to persuade Wanderer to help search for her loved ones in the Arizona desert. When the pair find Melanie's brother and her boyfriend in a hidden rebel cell led by her uncle, Wanderer is at first hated. Once the rebels accept Wanderer, whom they dub Wanda, Wanda's whole perspective on humanity changes. While the straightforward narrative is short on detail about the invasion and its stunning aftermath, it shines with romantic intrigue, especially when a love triangle (or quadrangle?!) develops for Wanda/Melanie. 10-city author tour. Review
"A brilliant and fascinating premise.... Its mix of adventure and new love on a new Earth is just right to get lost in this summer." (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Sherri Hallgren 2008)

"The Host lives up to the hype, blending science fiction and romance in a way that has never worked so well." (Library Journal Jane Jorgenson 2008)

"An epic story of love, family, and loyalty. . . . The Host is The X-Files meets Days of Our Lives." (USA Today Carol Memmott 2008)

"Meyer is more interested in relationships than in flashy genre conventions. . . . Meyer's affirmative life lesson is disarming." (Entertainment Weekly Jeff Giles )

"Meyer has, like one of her vampires, turned into something rare and more than merely human: a literary phenomenon....The way she manages the reader's curiosity maintaining tension and controlling the flow of information, is simply virtuosic....People do not want to just read Meyer's books; they want to climb inside them and live there." (Time Lev Grossman )

"A fantastic, inventive, thoughtful, and powerful novel. The Host should come with a warning label: it will grab you and keep you reading well into the wee hours of night, and keep you thinking, deeply, hauntingly, well after the final word. Stephenie Meyer captures characters and handles story line like a master--a hybrid combination of Stephen King and Isaac Asimov."
    (Ridley Pearson )

"Stephenie Meyer is an amazing phenomenon--out of the brightness of her mind and spirit comes the illuminated darkness of her stories. For no matter how much pain her characters suffer, Meyer infuses the tales with light and hope." (Orson Scott Card )

well, i read this about 2 or 3 months ago, before the twilight series got so popular. i still haven't read those and i refuse to even those the host has the be one of the best books i have ever read. im in 7th grade and this is an "adult" book, but really its so indept and interesting even someone who hated reading can get into it. its quite long, but as soon as i finished it i started pondering long and hard about those themes and everything that happened. its a great book and really wanda and melanie take you through a grand experience of trust, love, faith, and so much more.

    Review for The Host5
The Host was a very good novel; very different from the Twilight series, though. The writing is similar, but everything else is completely different. Not a lot of romance - mostly sci-fi.

The Day Watch (Watch, Book 2)

The Day Watch (Watch, Book 2)

The second book in the internationally bestselling fantasy series, Day Watch begins where Night Watch left off, set in a modern-day Moscow where the 1,000-year-old treaty between Light and Dark maintains its uneasy balance through careful vigilance from the Others. The forces of darkness keep an eye during the day, the Day Watch, while the agents of Light monitor the nighttime. Very senior Others called the Inquisitors are the impartial judges insisting on the essential compact. When a very potent artifact is stolen from them, the consequences are dire and drastic for all sides. Day Watch introduces the perspective of the Dark Ones, as it is told in part by a young witch who bolsters her evil power by leeching fear from children’s nightmares as a counselor at a girls’ summer camp. When she falls in love with a handsome young Light One, the balance is threatened and a death must be avenged.

Day Watch is replete with the thrilling action and intricate plotting of the first tale, fuelled by cunning, cruelty, violence, and magic. It is a fast paced, darkly humorous, haunting world that will take root in the shadows of your mind and live there forever.

    From Publishers Weekly
The morally ambiguous second volume in Lukyanenko's trilogy (after 2006's Night Watch, a major literary and cinematic success in Russia) portrays the epic supernatural struggle between good and evil from the point-of-view of the witch Alisa Donnikova. Lukyanenko imagines a parallel reality, where human history has been shaped by a centuries-old conflict between the Dark Ones and the Light Ones, magical beings whose existence is kept carefully hidden from humanity. After Alisa, a Dark One, loses her powers in a minor confrontation with some Light Ones, she heads to the Crimea to recuperate at a girls' camp, where she feeds on children's nightmares. There she falls in love with Igor, who turns out to be a Light magician. The plot centers on the ramifications of their romance and the theft of Fafnir's Talon, a powerful artifact whose provenance is linked to the legendary Ring of the Nibelungs. Though the artifact conceit is less well developed than that of the truth-telling instrument in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, the fast-paced story augurs well for the last installment. Customer Reviews

This review is injurious to the causes of Light and Dark4
The previous book left us with an unbalanced Moscow. The forces of Light gained a powerful ally in the form of Svetlana Nazarova, a potential Great Sorceress. Even before she knew she was an Other - one of that mysterious class of beings who can work magic, who can curse, bless and change their shapes - she was able to create a curse that very nearly destroyed Moscow. She, and the city, were saved through the bravery of Anton Gorodetsky and the Night Watch, who guard against the excesses of the forces of Darkness. In the end, the Light prevailed.

But this battle between Light and Dark is far from over....

As with The Night Watch, this volume contains three books. In the first, a young witch named Alisa Donnikova has overreached herself. In a fight with the Night Watch, Alisa poured every last drop of her magical energy into supporting her fellow Day Watch members, an act of selflessness that nearly cost her her life. Burned out, she's directed to take a break at a children's summer camp in the Crimea. Posing as a camp counselor, she would be in a prime position to feed off the nightmares of impressionable young girls.

A word about Others and their powers. The foundation of an Other's power comes from humans. While any Other has her own reserves to call on, she may... feed on the normal people around her. The Light Others take happiness and joy - literally. Have you ever been feeling really good, and then somehow the feeling just drains away? That's what the Light Others do, and it powers them to no end. Much like a flowering shrub, pruning someone's happiness doesn't make it go away forever, and it may even come back greater, but still - in order to become stronger, the Light Others have to weaken people.

Those on the side of the Dark, on the other hand, feed off of fear and anger, but when they do, that fear and anger remain. It's like warming yourself by the fire - as long as you keep feeding it, it'll keep you warm. A Dark Other at the height of his power could probably super-charge himself just by going to a snowed-in airport for a day. Believe me. This stew of rage and frustration is a little too much for Alisa, however - she must subsist on the "thin broth" that is children's nightmares.

While she's there, however, her plan hits a snag in the form of a handsome, solid, beautiful man named Igor. Despite herself, she falls in love with him, and she falls hard.

The fact that he's a Light Other doesn't come up until it's much too late.

The second story brings a mysterious figure to Moscow. Vitaly Rogoza has no memory of who he is or where he came from. All he knows is that he has to go to Moscow, and that he has power - the power of a Dark Other. Despite his personal amnesia, he has no trouble ingratiating himself with the Moscow Day Watch, and soon discovers that his power appears to have no upper limits. Why this should be, no one knows. Is he some Dark magician, beyond classification? Or is he something else entirely - something new and terrible? Whatever he is, what is his goal, and what is his link to the theft of Fafnir's Talon, a Dark artefact of unspeakable power?

The third story brings it all together - the sad fate of Alisa Dinnokova, the theft of the Talon, and thhe rise and fall of the Great Sorceress Svetlana Nazarova. What's more, the greater plans of the Light and the Dark are laid bare - and changed forever.

As before this book is heavily laden with tthe philosophy of Good versus Evil, Light and Dark. More importantly, it addresses the issues of freedom, a central tenet to the forces of Darkness. How free, they ask, can we really be?

The Light wants to make humanity better. They believe that, given the right influences and incentives, humanity can be great. But they need to be guided. Molded. Shaped. Consequently, the Light occasionally embarks on grand, world-changing plans, few of which actually work out the way they intend.

The Dark, on the other hand, worships freedom. Every person, they say, should be free to choose his or her own path. If that path means doing good, then so be it. If it means doing evil, well, that's cool too. The point is that every person is capable of deciding how their lives should be led, and no one - human or Other - should be able to take that freedom away from them.

It's one of the oldest questions there is - how much freedom do we really deserve? And it's a question that can never be definitively answered. But in these books, it's fun to watch it play out.

My Darker Side Was All Giddy....5
The second book in the Watch series that mainly follows Alisa; Anton is still here but not in the capacity that we have grown accustomed. This is do to this book is from the perspective of the Day Watch (Dark Others). This gets us more in touch with the other sides characters and even sheds light on why dark and light others don't mix....or shouldn't? You get to learn a lot more about Alisa the right hand of Zebulon and even how Zebulon's mind works. I liked this one more because it was a way quicker read for me but that's mainly because most characters were introduced in the first and the plot lines of the stories pushed me on. The format is that of the original, with three stories making up one book. But they always end up going full circle and they conclude so you don't have to worry about being kept hanging.

    Great Sequel5
I won't write a summary of the book, as that's already been done in countless reviews, but I will leave you with this: If you enjoyed the first book, then you will also enjoy this second installment in the series.

Day Watch was a fantastic read that I couldn't put down. The book gives you perspective into the Dark ones; you soon realize that the Light ones aren't "good" and the Dark Ones aren't "evil", there are hints of good and evil in both factions.

Can't wait to get my hands on Twilight Watch.

This book is for "serious readers" but Granger writes in a very entertaining style. If you never understood the term "postmodernism" or how "literary alchemy" is used by great authors from Shakespeare to J.K. Rowling, then this is a fun way to learn. UNLOCKING HARRY POTTER is the only book to examine in depth the importance of what Rowling said in an interview from 1998, that "to invent this wizard world" she had to learn about alchemy "in order to set the parameters and establish the stories' internal logic." - . - . - . - . - Here's what other HARRY POTTER authors and experts have to say about UNLOCKING HARRY POTTER: - . - . - . - . - "I got so hooked I had to stop everything else and just read, read, read. I carried it around the house, read it while using the excercycle, I hid in rooms away from the action of daily life so I could take it all in. I haven't had that reaction to a book since, well, THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE. A spectacular read for all serious fans of Rowling's works. Compelling, well-argued, fun and funny. Engaging. Thought provoking. Erudite." - Tom Morris, author of IF HARRY POTTER RAN GENERAL ELECTRIC and PHILOSOPHY FOR DUMMIES. - . - . - . - . - "John Granger peels back the layers of Rowling's stories and sees patterns the rest of us miss - and he never forgets to be a fan, engaging in fun speculation about what will come in the finale. Once more Granger has shown himself to be second to none among Potter commentators and literary sleuths. Some books are meant to be ingested quickly. Not this one. Serious fans of HARRY POTTER will relish it." - David Baggett, editor of HARRY POTTER AND PHILOSOPHY.

Brilliant......thoroughly equips you to become a serious reader!5
There is not much more I can say about this book that hasn't already been said. This book is definitely in my top ten books to recommend to anyone who wants to read and understand all the varying levels and depths of Harry Potter. There is definitely more there than meets the eye, which most readers get some sense of, but which can be teased out with careful examination and analysis. John Granger gives you the tools to do just that in this remarkable read!!

    If you are not J.K.Rowling...1
IF YOU ARE NOT J.K.ROWLING THEN STOP WRITING ABOUT HARRY POTTER. THE ENTIRE SERIES OF BOOKS WERE BORN IN HER BRAIN, IN HER IMAGINIATION AND NOT ANOTHER LIVING SOUL ON THIS PLANET HAS THE RIGHT TO EVEN EXPLORE HARRY POTTER FOR PROFIT OR LITERARY RECOGNITION. I AM SICK TO DEATH OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO THINK A WORK OF FICTION, FICTION PEOPLE, DO YOU GET WHAT FICTION IS?.....NEEDS SUCH EXPLAINTATIONS OR IN DEPTH DISECTION. IF A WORK OF FICTION CAN SHAKE YOUR FAITH THEN YOU HAVE NO FAITH TO SPEAK OF. LEAVE HARRY POTTER AND J.K.ROWLING ALONE. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

    Amazing Erudite Work5
This is not always an easy read and there's some hard thinking required to keep up with John Granger's fascinating views. Likewise, I'm sure there are simpler books which roll around in the Potter mythos more completely. On the other hand, I cannot imagine a more thoughtful and though provoking analysis of the bigger historical movements and context that informs, flows within and, sometimes, drives the Potter series.

If you are someone for who learning is a pleasure and discovering new areas of learning to explore is a delight, this book is for you. Buy it right now, it is a great joy.

One note: this book was written before HP7 was published so it is somewhat dated in that respect. I would be curious to see a newer edition which encompasses the last book. But, having said that, it was very interesting to read this book knowing what Granger did not, the contents of the last book. His views stand up quite well and the honesty of this 'blind test' is comforting and fascinating.

The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian: The Original Adventures of the Greatest Sword and Sorcery Hero of All Time!

The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian: The Original Adventures of the Greatest Sword and Sorcery Hero of All Time!

“Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities . . . there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars. . . . Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand . . . to tread
the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.”

Conan is one of the greatest fictional heroes ever created–a swordsman who cuts a swath across the lands of the Hyborian Age, facing powerful sorcerers, deadly creatures, and ruthless armies of thieves and reavers.

In a meteoric career that spanned a mere twelve years before his tragic suicide, Robert E. Howard single-handedly invented the genre that came to be called sword and sorcery. Collected in this volume, profusely illustrated by artist Mark Schultz, are Howard’s first thirteen Conan stories, appearing in their original versions–in some cases for the first time in more than seventy years–and in the order Howard wrote them. Along with classics of dark fantasy like “The Tower of the Elephant” and swashbuckling adventure like “Queen of the Black Coast,” The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian contains a wealth of material never before published in the United States, including the first submitted draft of Conan’s debut, “Phoenix on the Sword,” Howard’s synopses for “The Scarlet Citadel” and “Black Colossus,” and a map of Conan’s world drawn by the author himself.

Here are timeless tales featuring Conan the raw and dangerous youth, Conan the daring thief, Conan the swashbuckling pirate, and Conan the commander of armies. Here, too, is an unparalleled glimpse into the mind of a genius whose bold storytelling style has been imitated by many, yet equaled by none.

    From The Washington Post
Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Robert E. Howard (1906-1936), the creator of a blue-eyed Cimmerian fighting man, who wandered the ancient Hyborian age as a thief, pirate and mercenary, before finally seizing the royal throne of Aquilonia. In the course of many adventures, this axe and sword-wielding battle-machine was to encounter Stygian demons, a lonely being from another planet, vampiric witches and saturnine sorcerers who possess the elixir of life, a seraglio's worth of scantily clad slave girls, more than one haughty but secretly hot-blooded princess, and, not least, many, many, indeed hordes, of bloodthirsty, blood-crazed Picts, Kushites, Shemites, Vendhyans and Hyrkanians. Even more remarkably, this indomitable warrior earned the love of both Belit, the notorious corsair Queen of the Black Coast, and the deadly Valeria of the Red Brotherhood. Such a hero could obviously be no one but Conan, King Conan, Conan the Barbarian.

To most of us these days, Robert E. Howard's Cimmerian is rather a joke. During the 1970s, the Depression-era hero evolved into a comic-book icon and was later literally embodied by the young Arnold Schwarzenegger in a pair of exceptionally good sword-and-sorcery films. Soon thereafter appeared both the bookish Conan the Librarian and Terry Pratchett's mangled and bitter old bandit Cohen the Barbarian. Many an older reader must still recollect the Frank Frazetta paperback covers, top-action portraits of a massive half-naked fullback with a broadsword, either in full berserker fury or standing triumphantly upon a mound of dead enemies, his mighty thigh caressed by an adoring Playmate of the Month. Or two. Of course, none but the brave deserve the fair.

Are the tales of Conan then what a female friend would call "boys books"? Testosterone-driven daydreams for 15-year-olds? Pulp schlock with titillating suggestions of sadomasochism, rape and sapphism? (Many of the stories were originally illustrated for Weird Tales by the legendary Margaret Brundage, who specialized in kinky cover art.) The answer to all these questions is, obviously, yes.

Yet without making grandiose claims for them, Howard's Conan chronicles are also a bit more than that. They are, as Patrice Louinet demonstrates in his forewords and afterwords to these three volumes, studies in the clash of Barbarism and Civilization. In Howard's grim and all too realistic view, the barbarians are always at the gate, and once a culture allows itself to grow soft, decadent or simply neglectful, it will be swept away by the primitive and ruthless. As a character insists in "Beyond the Black River," the most deeply felt and complex Conan story, "Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. . . . Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph."

To Howard, however, this isn't wholly a bad thing. As King Conan plaintively confesses to his friend Prospero, "These matters of statecraft weary me as all the fighting I have done never did. . . . In the old free days all I wanted was a sharp sword and a straight path to my enemies. Now no paths are straight and my sword is useless." In essence, Conan is a creature of the wild -- he is frequently likened to a wolf or tiger -- and his understanding of the world is simple, instinctual, unmediated. While others hesitate or plan and speculate or find themselves trapped by their social positions or tangled in the snares of bureaucracy, Conan acts. Fear, doubt, uncertainty -- these never trouble his nobly savage breast. He does what needs to be done, by Crom, no matter how daunting the task. And afterwards he quaffs his wine and moves on.

Conan's greatest affinity is obviously with the Western gunfighter of our imaginations, the quiet drifter like Shane or Cheyenne who one day rides into town and then, after a final gun-blazing showdown, rides off into the sunset. Before his suicide at the age of 30, Howard attempted every sort of adventure story -- horror ("Pigeons from Hell" is ludicrously titled but chilling), detective and occult fiction, sports narratives and Westerns. "Beyond the Black River" reads like a tale of settlers and rampaging Indians transposed to the borders of bronze-age Aquilonia. After all, when a plot failed to sell to one market, a serious pulp writer simply reworked it for another.

Unfortunately, this cavalier attitude was carried on by Howard's executors. When Conan was rediscovered in the '60s and '70s, writers were hired to mine his drafts for new stories. His published exploits were filled out and the chaotic Hyborian Age turned into a realm as carefully designed as Narnia or Middle Earth. Howard's energetic (if sometimes corny) writing was heavily edited and smoothed out. Eventually, though, these additions and pastiches came under attack as collectors and scholars like Glenn Lord and Karl Edward Wagner began to republish the original texts. That process has now been crowned by these authoritative editions of all the Conan stories, supplemented with their author's outlines and synopses, maps, letters and essays, as well as appendices on the location of surviving typescripts and much interpretative material by editor Louinet and series editor Rusty Burke. (There are additional compilations devoted to Howard's Puritan sword-slinger Solomon Kane and the Celtic warrior Bran Mak Morn but not yet of the Conan precursor, Kull.) These three volumes are individually illustrated, but each artist aims to be faithful, in his fashion, to Howard's descriptions of the formidable Cimmerian.

I've read most of the Conan stories, as well as the novel (included here) The Hour of the Dragon, and, approached as guilty pleasures, they can be wonderfully entertaining. For that matter, apart from Fritz Leiber's tales of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, sword and sorcery adventures don't come any better. Still, one must make allowances. Howard's writing can be cliché-ridden ("The Cimmerian froze in his tracks. It was no image -- it was a living thing, and he was trapped in its chamber!"). And there's undisguised racism: The darker an enemy's skin, the more vicious and animalistic his nature. Perhaps most disturbingly, Conan glorifies the Gordian Knot solution: The proper response to a complex problem is to grab a sword and brutally hack away until the problem stops moving. Some naive readers might imagine that such a policy actually works in the real world.

In general, Howard's plots involve a quest of some kind -- for treasure, for revenge -- and culminate in a fight with a witch or wizard, who is usually aided by hypnotic powers, magic talismans and demonic pets. Hidden tunnels and crumbling temples abound. Evil magic is always in the air:

"Ships did not put unasked into this port, where dusky sorcerers wove awful spells in the murk of sacrificial smoke mounting eternally from blood-stained altars where naked women screamed, and where Set, the Old Serpent, archdemon of the Hyborians but god of the Stygians, was said to writhe his shining coils among his worshippers."

In the cruder stories a lissome young woman is nearly always threatened, often drugged by the sickly sweet Black Lotus and led zombie-like, but eye-catchingly unclothed, to some fate worse than death. In "Black Colossus" an undead wizard sends his shadowy familiar into the chamber of a virgin princess, where the repulsive creature unctuously hisses its master's obscene prophecies: "But thou shalt be my queen, oh princess! I will teach thee the ancient forgotten ways of pleasure."

No matter how hopeless the outlook, Conan himself never gives up, never tires, somehow always survives. In "A Witch Shall Be Born" the warrior is actually crucified and as he hangs on a cross the vultures circle round him, one in particular:

"Conan drew his head back as far as he could, waiting, watching with the terrible patience of the wilderness and its children. The vulture swept in with a swift roar of wings. Its beak flashed down, ripping the skin on Conan's chin as he jerked aside his head, then before the bird could flash away, Conan's head lunged forward on his mighty neck muscles and his teeth, snapping like those of a wolf, locked on the bare, wattled neck. . . . Grimly he hung on, the muscles starting out in lumps on his jaws. And the scavenger's neck bones crunched between those powerful teeth. With a spasmodic flutter the bird hung limp. Conan let go, spat blood from his mouth."

To my mind, the longer works reveal Howard at his best. In "The Hour of the Dragon" Aquilonia is conquered by magic, but in battling to regain his lost throne Conan learns better to understand and appreciate his adopted country, as well as his duties as its ruler. In "Red Nails," the last Conan story he wrote before his death, Howard presents an in-bred civilization that has degenerated into a never-ending, generations-long guerrilla war between rival factions inside a single gigantic castle. Its Grand Guignol conclusion dramatizes the Freudian phrase "the return of the repressed" and leaves but one man standing. As with so many of the Conan stories, the overall mood is one of sorrowful wonder at the insane ways of men.

Conan is still a young wanderer in "Red Nails," only dreaming that one day he might become a king. Yet since Howard never bothered to publish the Conan stories in any particular order, readers already know from his very first appearance in "The Phoenix on the Sword" that the Cimmerian will realize his ambition. Indeed, from the beginning he strides out of the pages of the so-called Nemedian Chronicles, already the stuff of modern myth:

"But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west. Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet."

AOC & Conan (also this book)5
always loved graphic novels,Savage sword,Red Sonja.the new Age of Conan MMO has rejuvenated me,I bought the game but haven't played it yet, first going back & learning about Conan & ofcorse R.E.Howard,when I was young it was more about just the superficial content?. just received my copy of Born on the Battlefield & WOW!,so happy to have re-discovered such amazing work.

    The original master at work5
Foget your highbrow accounts of mid-life crises in the Hamptons. Forget your stories of love lost and won against the backdrop of (insert contrived historical setting here). This is what entertaining, escapist fiction is about. A guilty pleasure, something to be covertly enjoyed? No, by Crom! These stories are uncompromisingly true to themselves, and as a result have more integrity than most things I've read in the last 20 years. If only those writing in Fantasy these days could shrug off the weight of tired tropes and imposed expectations of the genre, they could produce something that approaches the fresh, snappy pace and well-described action that Howard pioneered. True, he had the advantage of helping invent the genre, and didn't have to write under this weight, but that's the fun part - like Raymond Chandler, you can read these works, see the genre being invented before your eyes and realise why the style became cliche - it was so good that everyone wanted to copy it.
I find it interesting that Howard, who struggled with depression, wrote stories that crackle with vitality and display what I see as a celebration of living a passionate life. Funny how that works. Anyway, I leave you with a telling quote from "The Tower of the Elephant" that sums up the noble honesty of the character of Conan and why he appeals so much: "Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing."

    "Who dies first?"5
The first of the three new editions of Robert E. Howard's Conan following the order in which they appeared and not the chronological sequence by the late Lyon Sprague de Camp. Some are classics of the genre (a genre which Howard pretty created single-handedly): "Phoenix on the Sword" -- in which King Conan, surrounded by assasins in his bed chamber, one hand against the wall, a battle axe in the other says through bloody lips, "Who dies first?" "A Witch Shall be Born" has the classic scene of Conan crucified. John Milius really screwed this up in the movie. It has none of the power of the image Howard created. In "Queen of the Black Coast" you have Howard at the height of his powers and Conan's great love of his life (another scene that Milius copped for the movie to much lesser effect). If you love fantasy than these three books will make, along with Tolkien, a great cornerstone to any library.

Victory of Eagles (Temeraire, Book 5)

Naomi Novik’s triumphant debut, His Majesty’s Dragon, introduced a dynamic new pair of heroes to the annals of fantasy fiction: the noble fighting dragon Temeraire and his master and commander, Capt. Will Laurence, who serves Britain’s peerless Aerial Corps in the thick of the raging Napoleonic Wars. Now, in the latest novel of this dazzling series, they soar to new heights of breathtaking action and brilliant imagination.

It is a grim time for the dragon Temeraire. On the heels of his mission to Africa, seeking the cure for a deadly contagion, he has been removed from military service–and his captain, Will Laurence, has been condemned to death for treason.

For Britain, conditions are grimmer still: Napoleon’s resurgent forces have breached the Channel and successfully invaded English soil. Napoleon’s prime objective: the occupation of London.

Separated by their own government and threatened at every turn by Napoleon’s forces, Laurence and Temeraire must struggle to find each other amid the turmoil of war and to aid the resistance against the invasion before Napoleon’s foothold on England’s shores can become a stranglehold.

If only they can be reunited, master and dragon might rally Britain’s scattered forces and take the fight to the enemy as never before–for king and country, and for their own liberty. But can the French aggressors be well and truly routed, or will a treacherous alliance deliver Britain into the hands of her would-be conquerors?

    From Publishers Weekly
Naomi Novik continues her alternate history of the Napoleonic wars in this fifth adventure featuring British Capt. William Laurence and his faithful celestial dragon, Temeraire. Picking up after Empire of Ivory, a disgraced Laurence has been convicted of treason, sentenced to a prison ship and is only one step away from the hangman's noose. Temeraire is relegated to a breeding area in Wales along with other dragons viewed as past their prime. When Bonaparte invades England, Laurence and Temeraire are soon free to fly and fight for king and country. Vance fully inhabits Novik's vividly realized fantasy world. His battle scenes are exciting as he describes all the intricate fighting tactics without sacrificing the thrills. With keen vocal characterizations, he portrays a wide variety of individuals, both human and nonhuman, with the dialogue between Temeraire and some snobbish, older dragons singularly entertaining. VICTORY OF EAGLES BY NAOMI NOVIK4
Bestselling author Naomi Novik returns with the fifth book in her Temeraire series - which has since been optioned by Peter Jackson - Victory of Eagles, where the war is not going so well for Britain, as Napoleon lands on her shores with his army of men and dragons fighting for his empire.

Temeraire is uncertain of the fate of his master and dearly close friend Captain Laurence, after the events of Empire of Ivory, Laurence now finds himself sentenced a traitor and awaiting execution. Relieved of service and residing in some breeding grounds in Wales, Temeraire must battle great odds to defy the military conduct, find, and rescue Laurence. In his journey, Temeraire gains some allies and begins a small army of his own, composed solely of dragons and no commanders, who fight by their own code and conduct. Eventually joining the British force against Napoleon, Temeraire demands pay and rights for the dragons, equal to those given to any member of His Majesty's service. It is up to Temeraire and his army to first find Laurence and then to help defend Britain again Napoleon's invading forces, or all may be lost.

Victory of Eagles is a stunning addition to the series that adds new elements and subplots, making the continuing story more interesting and riveting. Like the others, Victory of Eagles leaves readers hungrily waiting for more.

    Temeraire rules!5
I am loving this book! I am only halfway through at this point, but am loving this segment of the saga even more than the past ones. The writing of Naomi Novik is so creative and descriptive, it almost makes you feel that you are there.

    Horatio Hornblower with Dragons4
This is an excellent series. Victory of Eagles is the lastest book that proves Fantasy fiction isn't all about weird tales and stories. Victory of Eagles is also a character driven novel about the difficulties of the main heroes, Will Laurence and Temeraire.

The story is not just about dragons. Its also about Right and Wrong and how Patriotism and Honor plays a part. For those of you who are not fans of Sci Fi and Fantasy, but are fans of Horiatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian, this is a series you can read and enjoy.

    More fun than expected5
I need to state this first. I was vehemently against almost everything that 4E stood for. Until I embraced that you could play both 3.5 and 4E (and should) as separate games. Sure, both are fantasy games, but they're not close. BUT - played on its own premise, this is FUN!

    Fantastically Demeaning1
As an RPG, this makes for a great boardgame I'd give my 8yr old nephew and tell him "Try this out, but when you're ready for the real thing, I'll hook you up".
I liken 4th ed. to the first 15 minutes I spent watching Star Wars episode I. I had high hopes, but very early on I realized something was dreadfully wrong. A cherished and much beloved source of escapism in my life had become mutated and perverted before my very eyes and I could feel my IQ being leached out of my ears in the effort to dumb myself down enough to get some enjoyment out of what I was enduring.
Reading about the Dragonborn was my Jar-Jar Binks moment of no return. "Play this character if you want to look like a dragon"... WHAT!!! Are the serious??? How infantile and insulting! Imagination...GONE!! The moment my eyeballs touched on that juvenile bit of script I knew that this had been marketed exclusively to conform to the online gaming world and was not asking of it's players any imagination or brain power or creativity. Don't get me wrong, I love video games and have a rip-snorting, fire-breathing laptop just for the hot graphics, but D&D has a different role in the gameworld and 4th ed is trying to tear that role away and grind the game into submission and conformity with the WoW.
There are a few nifty ideas: the encounter powers/daily powers, the occasional tweak here or weapon there, but overall it is a dry and bland corporate offering rushed out way too soon so as to make money. Some of the remarks I've read talk about how it's less complex than 3.5; well you are damn right there!!! The cornerstone of the game has always been take what you want and discard the rest, if there are too many choices, then get rid of a few and play with what works. The vast amount of material available and the flexibility that 3.5 offered allowed for one's imagination to be fully rendered on your character sheet. You could build exactly what you wanted and go in any direction you cared. All that is gone now; there are only a precious few directions in which you can take a character and they are not all that spectacular to begin with.
Another thing is the books themselves. They remind me of my textbooks from junior high; boring, limited, and a bit condescending. The 3.5 books were rich and detailed; enveloping pieces of layered information that really made you feel as though you were being brought into another world. I often would spend serious amounts of time reading the script in the background just to get a little bit more of the story about worlds and characters I would truly invest in. I tried multiple times to read and enjoy 4.0 and I JUST DON"T CARE!!!! It's aweful! If 3.5 were Lord of the Rings, then 4.0 is Battlefield Earth with N'Sync playing all the major roles. Ugh. I'm wearing myself out. It's like I'm mourning the loss of an old friend who decided he wanted to work for a health insurance company or go into politics or something.

Wait.. Where did the fun go?1
First of this edition is not needed because 3.5 is almost perfect. Why spend all this time and money on a new edition instead of changing a few rules in 3.5? Between me and my friend we have every 3.5 book avaliable and frankly I don't feel like starting my collection over. Plus it sucks.

    Read It!5
The army stands poised to attack. Thomas Hunter must prepare and train four more leaders to defend against the enemy outnumbering him ten to one. The game is on. the players didn't know anything about it but Thomas called it football and the winner was going to be one of the leaders.

One young man small in stature and a nonparticipant in the game undenounced to him or anyone else in the crowd ends up with the ball and takes it to the end zone.

Thomas chooses the four and one is the small young on the sidelines. Not even Thomas knew what that would lead to and the tale has just begun. The chosen one finds himself on a special mission not for Thomas but for someone he thought was no more than a mythological creature.

Between the mission, the secrecy, and following the orders of Thomas the four are whirred through a string of events that should take there life. The action never stops and the pressure never releases.

A Handy Helpful Tool in Many Cases4
When it comes to strategy guides, gamers oftentimes invest in them to know the secrets of the game more so than the basic walkthrough itself. With Valkyria Chronicles, you'll find you might be investing in this guide for actual strategy rather than simply just a simple breakdown of each level. This is especially true when you consider that Valkyria Chronicles is actually a strategy RPG that puts an emphasis on strategy over the simple strength of your characters. Therefore, investing in this guide might not be the worst idea in the world if you're looking for a boost in your strategy, or if you're looking to get an A-Ranking.

The guide begins by introducing you to the characters you'll meet before it jumps into the basics. These are short, simple biographies that just introduce you to a character. The guide presents it without spoiling much (if anything) in the main storyline. The basics, however, is a treat for those who are new to the game. While most of it is covered in the instruction manual, there are some things here that you won't find in the booklet. Much more of the basics is spent talking more about the classes and how to use them as well as more advanced combat tactics. These are more than just random tips. They can actually be viable to anyone having problem understanding the system of Valkyria Chronicles.

Afterwards we get into the meat and potatoes of the guide. The walkthrough. As mentioned, Valkyria Chronicles is a game where simply having strong characters isn't enough. You need to know how to utilize your units and this is where you'll get the most out of this guide. Each mission begins by showing you the enemies you'll find in an area and a map that displays them all. There's also a route drawn on the map to show you the fastest (and often safest) way to reach your objective. The detail of each mission is presented in a step by step walkthrough, usually with some incredibly detailed text to go along with it. There are also some really detailed screenshots that can really help most players out. Following this walkthrough it's pretty simple to see who you should be going after and who is safe to pass up. In most cases, you'll find yourself getting a lot of B rankings should you go about it that way, but that doesn't mean the guide won't help you get an A.

Without question, some of the best snippets of information the walkthrough has to offer comes from their A-Rank strategies. They're often told in a quicker fashion than what you'll find in the main text. The A-Rank strategies assume you know the mission well enough to go for it, but if you don't, the guide often reminds you to look at the main text.

There can be a lot of reading involved when it comes to the walkthrough because there's so much detail, but at least you'll come from most battles without any hassles. It also includes reports which are laid out in the same way. The guide is able to do all this without spoiling the plot.

After all that, the guide goes into the recruits where it shows a table of what their stats look like as their class levels. It'll also tell you who their friends are and potentials but it doesn't really go any further than that. In truth, you won't get to know much more about each recruit other than what the game tells you. On the other hand, it's not so easy to into such vast detail on each and every character.

Next up is an equipment chart on all kinds of weapons for each class and all the vehicles you'll get along the way. There's also a whole list of potentials and how they'll affect each and every recruit. There can be some page flipping between the two, but it's not that big a deal. Lastly, the guide goes into all the medals and a couple of secrets found within the game.

The only major issue with the Valkyria Chronicles guide is that it does nothing to help you out with skirmishes. Skirmishes are some of those optional battles you can partake in over and over again on certain terrains. Unfortunately, the guide doesn't do anything to help the player out in that regard at all. Nothing on how to get the best rankings, no suggestions on deployment or even what you could expect. In fact, the guide doesn't really even mention the skirmishes at all. With how detailed the walkthrough was on the main missions, it's a shame there could be no similar rundown of skirmishes. At least most skirmishes are all based on the mission the map took place on.

The only really big problem with this guide is some of the writing, which can be confusing at times. There are many grammatical errors strewn throughout. Worse than the grammar mistakes, however, is how the guide gets a little confused with the directions it gives you. It'll say go west when it really means for you to go east. Other times its directions on what you need to do can be a little vague. The guide isn't consistent with when you need to use a turn and when you need to use an action (CP, in other words). It goes between both terms but at some points it's never consistent. It might say "On Turn 1 send the Shamrock forward," and then say, "Use Turn 2 to send Largo forward." For some gamers this may mean that after sending the Shamrock forward you end the phase and send Largo forward. This wouldn't be such a big problem if the guide didn't muddle the terms so much. For the most part it's easy to tell when they mean "turn" and when they mean "action" but a little consistency would've made the guide far easier to use.

Putting aside those issues, the guide is excellent for those looking to get through the story and looking to get through it with all A's. The strategies here are gold and should see you through the game with little problems whatsoever. It's a guide that helps out and doesn't ruin the experience of the game while it does.

    Overall very helpful.5
Overall the strategy guide is very helpful, especially know where the enemy is, where the high value targets are (Aces, Leaders and Tanks for which you get bonus points for killing and in the case of aces, weapons), and giving you a better idea of the overall picture and flow of things. There is one problem with it, in the back sections in particular are several typos in the info for the R&D and Training Field upgrades. Other than that, well worth it and a great companion to get with a copy of Valkyria Chronicles. In the end it is a great help to what I believe is the True Game of the Year.

    A good guide for a great game5
By way of introduction, Valkyria Chronicles (VC) is an excellent fast-paced real-time RPG from Sega. Set in what appears to be a fictional Europe, it chronicles the adventure of Welkin Gunther and his platoon of officers and soldiers as they try to fend off an invasion by the Empire.

The VC Guide by Bradygames is a good complement to the game itself. It offers the reader valuable insights into the game and its secrets, and sets out useful strategies which can be deployed in-game. Like all other Bradygames guides, it also provides detailed information on the characters (including their stats on a per-level basis) and the enemies. There is also a wealth of information on the items, weapons, armor etc. in the game. So for those of you who love stats, this Guide is for you.

The Guide is also packed with excellent screen shots which are very useful when trying to understand certain maneuvers and it helps gives the Guide a very thorough feel. It also contains area maps (with enemy locations etc) which allows the reader to have a better understanding of a particular area should he/she choose not to use the strategy suggested by the Guide.

    In summary:

    Pros
+ Packed with data (incl. strategies, stats and secrets).
+ Contains maps & enemy locations.
+ Contains screen shots (it's easier to understand something visually).
+ All images etc are in color (the same cell-shading approach is adopted to make the Guide look authentic).

    Cons
    - May be too "wordy", i.e. it requires reading several paragraphs for a particular strategy. (I should say that this is important though since a good strategy needs to be well understood in order for it to work effectively.)
    - A few errors though nothing major or significant in my opinion.
    - The font size in the stats sections is a little small but manageable.

    Overall
In my opinion, this Guide is very comprehensive and would certainly be of use to both VC newbies as well as veterans.

    Very good book !5
Really cool for star wars fans, full of details about jedi history. There's a lot of pictures and it's real easy to read. Highly recommended ! :)

If you thought you might be interested...5
...then you would definitely enjoy this book. I have enjoyed most of the 'Essential' books of the Star Wars Universe. I find that they are very good at filling in the holes between the books, comics and games. It answers lots of little questions that you didn't even know had been asked.

    Reference for George Lucas' Universe5
The book has a very complete "historical" background for the Star Wars universe. Although some topics are not covered in the films, it emcompasses all books, comics and other sources of George Lucas' universe. It is a must for all Star Wars fans!
